چکیده
TUBERCULOID RELAPSE IN LEPROMATOUS LEPROSY Sir, Waters & Ridley ' recently reported 6 patients who had been lepromatous and who, after many years of chemotherapy and bacteriological negativity, were found on relapse to have upgraded to borderline-tuberculoid (BT) leprosy . In a related article,2 they reported the development of weakly posi tive lepromin reactions in some lepromatous patients treated for more than 22 years; a control group of BL patients remained lepromin negative, when less than 20 years of treatment had been given . We have recently seen tuberculoid relapses in 2 previously lepromatous patients, from western Uganda, 7 and 1 2 years after initial diagnosis. They had had multiple-drug regimens and had never shown signs of reaction. Condensed histories of both cases are given below.

Background: Langerhans cells are important in the pathogenesis of leprosy. A recent study reported that these cells were almost absent in the epidermis overlying lepromatous lesions. Objective: To investigate a possible relationship between the number of Langerhans cells and the histopathologic spectrum of lesions in patients with leprosy. Methods: An immunohistochemical staining for S100 prot...
متن کاملTuberculoid relapse in lepromatous leprosy.
It is commonly accepted that the attainment of bacteriological negativity fails to restore the immune state of leprosy patients who have downgraded to lepromatous. We report six patients who had been lepromatous (LLs), and who, after many years of chemotherapy and bacteriological negativity, were found upon relapse to have upgraded to borderline-tuberculoid (BT). Five had become Mitsuda lepromi...
متن کاملConsequences of smallpox vaccination in leprosy patients.
This study illustrates the consequences of smallpox revaccination in 45 lepromatous, 28 tuberculoid, and 47 normal individuals. Results obtained with intradermal inoculations indicated that the patients with leprosy were associated with a relative anergy against the vaccinia virus, the anergy being minimal in the tuberculoid leprosy but marked in the cases with lepromatous leprosy. Major vaccin...
متن کاملEvaluation of the autoimmune response in leprosy.
Immunological responses to a panel of antigens were evaluated in 27 patients with lepromatous and 20 patients with tuberculoid leprosy and compared with 24 pulmonary tuberculosis patients, 25 systemic lupus erythematosus patients and 41 healthy blood donors. Some autoantibody specificities were extensively studied for the first time in mycobacterial infections. Striking immunoserological abnorm...
